Guitarist Sheryl Bailey Takes a Break from Recording at MCG to Perform at Omni William Penn Hotel
March 5th, 2008MCG Jazz Nights at the Omni William Penn Hotel presents guitarist and native Pittsburgher Sheryl Bailey, Friday, March 14, 2008, who will be in town for a recording on the MCG Jazz label. Performances are at 7:00 & 9:00 p.m. and are included with a three-course gourmet dinner for $27.50 in the grand Omni Terrace Room. Dinner and performance reservations may be made by calling the Omni William Penn Hotel at 412-553-5235.
Bailey will be performing songs from the new album, a mixture of original charts, standards, and compositions by Emily Remler, who had a long history with MCG Jazz. Says Marty Ashby, Executive Producer of MCG Jazz, of Sheryl Bailey: “When I first heard her perform at the ‘55 Bar’ in New York, I was struck by the passion and fire of her playing, something I hadn’t heard since Emily [Remler]. We have been working on this recording project for over two years now, and I am thrilled that it is finally becoming a reality.” Bailey has already released a number of albums, in between her busy schedule of touring and teaching, but this will be her first on the MCG Jazz label. It also marks the first major label release of a female guitarist to front a jazz big band, offering a distinct new sound for jazz and guitar lovers alike.
Bailey will pare down to a quartet for the Omni performance, including saxophonist Mike Tomaro, bassist Brian Stahursky, and drummer David Glover. Those in attendance at the Omni will be among the first to hear music from her new record, in quartet arrangements.
